SALT LAKE CITY — A Rose Park man was charged Thursday with driving under the influence after allegedly hitting and seriously injuring two pedestrians, including a man who is on life support from the March accident.

Three people were walking in the bicycle lane near 50 S. 600 West in Salt Lake City on March 20 when two of them were hit "straight on" by a speeding Jeep, according to charges filed in 3rd District Court.

Boyd Petrie, 32, admitted he was "driving drunk," the charges state. An officer responding to the collision noticed a strong odor of alcohol and said Petrie's speech was slurred, his eyes were glassy and red, and he was swaying while standing, the charges state.

One victim, Lindy Jones, suffered a broken back, lacerated spleen, a broken pelvis and was bleeding from the brain, prosecutors say. The second victim, Raju Butts "is missing a portion of his skull to help with swelling of his brain" and is currently on life support, according to the charges.

Petrie's blood alcohol content was 0.16, twice the legal limit, the charges state.

Petrie was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, a third-degree felony. He was also charged with driving on a suspended license and failure to stay in one lane, class C misdemeanors.
