SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is promoting an energy-savings device that turns off air conditioning compressors at Utah homes for brief periods on hot afternoons to avoid brownouts.
Herbert vetoed a bill passed by the Legislature that would have expanded the use of the Cool Keeper program, but promised he would sign up for the device at his own house in Orem.
No need for that -- Rocky Mountain Power says it discovered Herbert was already using the device.
Herbert congratulated Rocky Mountain Power on Thursday for signing up 100,000 Cool Keeper customers.
The bill Herbert vetoed would have let the utility install the device at all homes unless an owner objected, instead of requiring homeowners to come forward and ask for one.
