SALT LAKE CITY — Utahns saved over 100 million gallons of water through water-wise landscaping conversions in 2024, the Utah Division of Water Resources announced. Slow the Flow offers rebates and incentives to update landscaping away from high-water-use grass lawns toward more sustainable, water-efficient landscaping. The DWR said Utahns replaced a combined total of 3 million square feet of lawn last year — and claimed over $7 million in incentives. “Every drop saved helps us secure Utah’s water future,” said Candice Hasenyager, Director of the Division of Water Resources, in a press release. “With improved programs and new initiatives, we’re excited to make it even easier for residents to save water and make a difference in their communities.” Those landscape conversions proved to make a big difference for Utah's water: 100 million gallons of Utah's most precious resource will be saved every year by these water-wise changes. And moving forward, incentives are going up. The DWR said participants may be eligible to receive $1-$3 per square foot of grass they replace. The DWR just urges people to remember not to remove or kill any of their grass until their application for the program has been approved. "Water is the lifeblood of our cities, businesses and future. By using it wisely, we’re making sure there’s enough for growth, prosperity, and a high quality of life for all Utahns," Slow the Flow said.
