SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Some Salt Lake County officials are eyeing a purchase of the former Utah Theatre in downtown Salt Lake City, envisioning it as a future home for events related to the Sundance Film Festival.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1itTED2) the historic theater houses an independent film archive but is otherwise seldom used.
County officials are studying possible renovations, an idea supported by a coalition of nonprofit arts groups.
The Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency owns the building.
County Mayor Ben McAdams says the county already operates most of the city's cultural facilities. He says he believes it can negotiate the changeover for free.
But critics question whether the proposed purchase and potential renovations are a wise investment. Republican Councilman Richard Snelgrove says the county shouldn't enter into the film business.
