NEW YORK (AP) - Editta (eh-DEE'-tah) Sherman, a photographer dubbed the "Duchess of Carnegie Hall," has died. She was 101.
Sherman lived above the famed New York City hall for six decades. Billy Lyons, an actor and Sherman's friend, says she died Friday in her sleep.
Her funeral was held Tuesday, the day Bill de Blasio was elected mayor. She had met him half a dozen years ago. He was one of the few politicians trying to keep artists from being evicted from the century-old studios above Carnegie Hall.
Lyons says the photographer and the future mayor spoke to each other in Italian, the language of their immigrant families.
Sherman was known for her portraits of musicians, actors and writers taken at Carnegie Hall. She was forced out of her studio in 2010 in a landlord-tenant battle.
