SALT LAKE CITY — Today is a somber day. Sept. 11 will always be a day of reverence and remembrance. While the horrors of that day will forever be etched in our minds, it is also a reminder of how resilient and strong we are as a nation.
Despite your political leanings or feelings of those in office, we can all join together on this day and call ourselves Americans.
In honor of that, I would like to share four movies that remind us of the faith, strength and positive attitude to never give up that embodies America.

The 1995 film "Apollo 13" recounts the true story of the ill-fated 13 Apollo mission.
The true story of the 1970 mission reminds all of us that the American spirit is indestructible.
It's a great movie to watch on Sept. 11 because it reminds us that even as we face certain death in the face, we will not go quietly and we will innovate and survive.
This year saw the release of the Jackie Robinson biopic "42."

We all know that Robinson was one of the greatest players to ever take to the diamond, but Robinson's story is the definition of the American dream.
Robinson was constantly told he wasn't good enough, that he couldn't hang with the big leaguers and flat out, that his skin was the wrong color. What did Robinson do with that? He used to fuel his game and became the most respected name in American's past time.
"42" reminds us that we can overcome anything and also gives us a glimpse at how far our country has come in such a short time and that we still have work to do.

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" isn't just about our beloved president; it's about putting an end to inequality.
No, the Emancipation Proclamation was not the solution to all the problems, but it was a beautiful over-due start.
A viewing of "Lincoln" will give us a sense of pride and act as a reminder that while our country may not be all we'd hoped, we can constantly progress. And that progression starts with respect and understanding.
It is a tough time for those looking for work and hoping to provide for their families. The job climate and economy is tough and it's hard to not get discouraged as you hope for more.

The film "The Pursuit of Happyness" is a glaring reminder that hard work and determination have no limits.
This movie is not passing on the message that if you work hard enough you will be a millionaire. It is, however, saying that hard work will get us where we need to go.
On top of that we need to focus on what's important. It's not money, power or status; it's family, friends and self -worth. If your motivation is to gain wealth, you will find yourself poor. If your motivation is to provide happiness to you and those around you, then your wealth will be beyond comprehension.
Today is a hard day, but it also a beacon of hope. Honor this day with your family and always remember those who were victims on that fateful day as well as those who have sacrificed so much so we can move forward and enjoy the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy.
