SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Antifreeze sold in Utah will have to include an ingredient making it less palatable to pets under a bill passed by the Legislature.

Senate Bill 218 passed Thursday. It requires that denatonium benzoate be mixed in with antifreeze. The bitter ingredient masks the sweet taste of antifreeze, which can be tasty but lethal to animals.

The Utah Humane Society says 10,000 dogs and cats suffer antifreeze poisoning every year. If Gov. Gary Herbert signs the bill, Utah would become the ninth state to establish such a requirement.

Senate President Michael Waddoups, a Taylorsville Republican, is sponsoring the measure.

The bill would take effect Jan. 1.
