SALT LAKE CITY -- You think football ends when the NFL season is over? Oh, no.

This spring, the Utah Blitz will kick off its inaugural season as part of the Women's Football Alliance. The team is not to be confused with the Utah Blitzz, the USL soccer team that held its last game in 2004.

Head Coach Greg Cover expects the team to do very well, especially considering the 40-yard dash times of some of the players.

"We've got two of them that are probably [near] 4.6 or 4.7 seconds," he said. "We've got a couple that can really run."

Cover says they've also got a quarterback that can throw a 60-yard bomb.

As for the lineman, Cover said, "A lot of them will have to play both ways, but they're picking up [the fundamentals] great and there's tons of potential. They'll be able to run circles around the 300 pound linemen they'll be facing."

**Blitz Schedule**

  • April 10—Vegas at Utah
  • April 17—Bye
  • April 24—Utah at Portland
  • May 1-Utah at Vegas
  • May 8—Portland at Utah
  • May 15—Utah at Fresno
  • May 22—Vegas at Utah
  • May 29—Bye
  • June 5—Non-division game
  • June 12—Portland at Utah
  • June 19—Utah at San Diego

Despite these figures, a lot of football fans may be skeptical that a women's league can be fun to watch. Cover was skeptical himself. "Then I saw the talent, their desire to play and their heart and the capability they have, and I was sold at that point," he said.

So why is Cover coaching the team, even though many people he approaches scoff at the idea of an all-female football team?

"I have an 11-year-old daughter that says she's going to be a pro football player when she gets older. (She's) a tomboy. This gives her an opportunity to maybe not play in the NFL, but play semi-pro football," he explained.

The first game of the nine game season is scheduled for April 10. All home games will be played at Granger High School.
