SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has appointed John Pearce to serve as his legal counsel.

Pearce has practiced civil litigation with the Salt Lake City office of Jones Waldo Holbrook & McDonough since 1999.

As senior adviser to Herbert, Pearce will provide legal counsel on policy matters and proposed legislation, as well as interact with the Legislature and advise staff on other issues.

Before joining Jones Waldo, Pearce worked from 1996 to 1999 in the Palo Alto, Calif., office of Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati.

Pearce got his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Utah.
