(KSL News) Some Utah high school students today watched a heart surgery. The State Office of Education and Intermountain Healthcare showed a taped surgery to students at seven sites across the valley.
As they watched, they listened to Dr. James Long describe the procedure.
Thalea Longhurst, Health Science & Technology Education Specialist: "The students are actually able to talk live with the artificial-heart surgeon as they watch a taped surgery of an artificial-heart surgery."

Each of the seven schools chose 50 students to participate from among those who've said they're interested in pursuing a medical career.
The Utah State Office of Education and IHC said this gives students a chance to see what a surgery is really like.
