SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah theaters lead the nation in "New Moon" ticket sales. Utah has become ground zero for the "Twilight" phenomenon.
Over the weekend, three movie theaters were ranked in the top 5 in total ticket revenue from the new release.
By taking in $142.8 million, "Twilight Saga: New Moon" had the third highest opening weekend in box office history.
Some of that success is owed to Utah audiences. Five Megaplex Theatres showed the movie to 190,000 people. That's more than the population of Salt Lake City!
A Megaplex spokesman confirms the theaters in South Jordan, Sandy and the Gateway were first, second and fifth in total ticket revenue from "New Moon" from Friday through Sunday.
That's even more impressive when you consider that statistic just adds up the money from tickets, which are cheaper here than in places like New York or Los Angeles.
Megaplex has already booked entire theaters for groups planning ahead for the release of the third "Twilight" movie in June.
