WASHINGTON (AP) -- Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz told D.C. city leaders he was "disappointed" they would not support asking residents to vote on whether same-sex marriage should be allowed in the nation's capital.
D.C.'s city council is preparing to legalize same-sex marriage in the city, and Chaffetz has been one of the loudest congressional opponents of the legislation. Congress reviews legislation the city passes.
During a congressional hearing Tuesday on greater autonomy for the city, Chaffetz, a Republican, asked the mayor and city council chairman if they would support letting voters weigh in. Both said no.
Earlier in the week D.C.'s board of elections said putting the same-sex marriage question on the ballot would violate city human rights legislation.
