SALT LAKE CITY -- A political-action committee created to fight college football's Bowl Championship Series is gaining support.
The Playoff PAC aims to replace the BCS with a playoff system. It already has picked up an endorsement from Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, and Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, also support the PAC.
Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff wants to take down the BCS with a lawsuit but supports the PAC as well.
"I think with pressure from Congress, and with an anti-trust lawsuit hopefully brought by the Department of Justice and a bunch of states, that the BCS will see the writing on the wall and fix it themselves," Shurtleff says.
PAC co-founder Matthew Sanderson told the Deseret News the idea is to put the money in the hands of the congressmen, senators and candidates who support a college football playoff. The PAC looks to raise money from fans and boosters.
Hatch had held a hearing earlier this year to highlight the problem of teams being excluded from the BCS despite having records better than those teams that participated. The University of Utah was excluded from last season's championship game although it was undefeated.
Rep. Barton, who also held House hearings on the BCS this year, called the entire BCS system a farce.
