SALT LAKE CITY - Police encouraged parents to be proactive at a presentation on gang prevention Saturday.
The Salt Lake Metro Gang Task Force hosted the event for parents concerned about gang activity.
The class informed parents about the reasons children may join a gang -- and pointed out warning signs that indicate they may have.
Detective Tom Loevlie with the task force said, "You know, I've had many parents surprised at my presentation. At the end, they say ‘you know, I didn't even know how active my son or daughter was.'"
The class is held once a month, as part of the Salt Lake Early Intervention program.
Other classes focus on building positive family relationships and improving communication between parents and their children.
