(KSL News) -- The head football coach of Notre Dame, Tyrone Willingham has been fired after three lackluster seasons.
One name being mentioned for the opening is Utah head football coach Urban Meyer.
If he skipped out early on his deal with the Utes to coach elsewhere, he'd be penalized 250-thousand dollars -- unless he left to coach the Fighting Irish, Ohio State or Michigan.
While he has always said he wouldn't answer questions about where he would coach next year until after the season, Meyer has said he and his family like Utah.
Willingham was fired today after three seasons in which he failed to return one of the nation's most storied football programs to prominence.
Meyer is one of the nation's hottest coaches right now after putting Utah on the national college football map. The Utes have put together a record-setting season, and will likely become the first team from a mid-major conference to crack the Bowl Championship Series.
