Neighborhood watch alerts crews to house fire

SOUTH JORDAN -- A South Jordan family can thank a neighborhood watchman for noticing and reporting a fire at their home while they were gone.

Jose Cuevas saw smoke coming from the windows of the home while on neighborhood patrol near 10300 South and 3000 West early Wednesday morning.

He knocked on the door and when nobody answered, he called 911.

"If I had come through here later, probably another 10 minutes, it (outside of home) would have been in flames," he said.

Firefighters arrived and quickly put out flames that were burning the main floor and the basement of the home, but not before the fire caused extensive interior damage.

The homeowners were out of town. No word on what caused the fire.
