Gene Kennedy Reporting / Greg Neft, KSL NewsradioBrookes Shumway killed his teenage friend at a sleepover seven years ago. He was 15 then. Today, he's 22 and appeared before the state's parole board hoping to be released from jail.

Brookes Shumway, Convicted of Murder: "I lost my temper, I grabbed the knife and stabbed him."

The words were tough for Brookes Shumway to speak and the reality was even tougher for Christopher Ray's family to hear. Seven years ago, Shumway stabbed his 14-year-old friend 40 times while at a sleepover.

Shumway once said it was in self-defense. Today, the 22-year-old told the parole board's hearing officer it was because his friend sexually came on to him.

Debbie Gette, Victim's Mother: "This story he's coming up with now is just another excuse. He doesn't know the meaning of truth. He needs to take a good look at himself. He's a liar and a cold-blooded murderer."

Jenny Johnson, Victim's Cousin: "I watched him. I watched his face and he didn't even show one ounce of emotion as Chris' body was shown, pictures of him in front of us."

No emotion at the trial and no emotion today.

Tami Shumway, Brookes' Mother: "Brookes has always been a private person, doesn't show his emotions, so that doesn't surprise me."

But it did surprise the hearing officer. Equally surprising to Kent Jones was the violent nature of this crime.

He went into jail at the age of 15. At 22, he's still there and could remain there for much longer for killing his friend.

Rick Shumway, Brookes' Father: "I do feel sorry for their family for the loss of their son but we've pretty much lost our son too. I hope someday we'll get him back."

The five-person parole board will ultimately determine whether Brookes Shumway is let out of jail. It could take more than a month for a decision.
