SALT LAKE COUNTY -- There is a new account of what the driver of a Porsche connected to a violent crash in Big Cottonwood Canyon Thursday night really knew about the ordeal. A witness, Preston, who requested not to have his last name revealed, tells KSL Newsradio the Porsche driver knew something really bad had happened.

"He said ‘I'm pretty sure there was a fatality involved,'" Preston said in a phone interview. "He knew that it was a head-on crash and he could hear it behind him.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputies say the Porsche and a Lotus were involved in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, when the Lotus lost control and collided with an oncoming SUV. That driver and his 13-year-old son were flown to the hospital in critical condition.

Investigators had said they were unclear, based on the Porsche driver's account, whether he knew what had happened.

Preston told KSL the driver rushed up to him and asked to use his cell phone to call 911.

"I also thought it was strange that if he heard the crash, that he didn't just stop and go back to see if he could help out in some way - even though he didn't have a cell phone," Preston said.

Preston said he filed a report with sheriff's deputies when he headed down the canyon. The driver of the Porsche was stopped and questioned shortly after that.

Investigators say it's unclear what charges may be filed, and it will be up to prosecutors who screen the case.
