LAYTON -- UDOT is warning drivers about a major roadblock to their travel plans through Davis County this weekend.

Interstate 15 will close in both directions at the Main Street Bridge in Layton from 7 p.m. Saturday to at least 4 a.m. Monday. Crews say some northbound lanes may not even be open until noon Monday. It's because the bridge is being demolished to make room for the new South Layton Interchange.

UDOT spokesman Adan Carillo says clean-up will take a lot of time.

"They'll put some sand on the freeway to keep it intact so that any chunks of concrete that fall down do not damage the surface of the roadway," Carillo said. "That's one of the things that usually take the longest."

Northbound traffic will be diverted off I-15 at the Layton exit (Exit 330). Southbound traffic will be ushered off at Hill Field Road (Exit 331).

The interchange is part of a $97 million project that should be completed by December 2010. It also includes:

  • Reconstruct mainline I-15 between the Kaysville 200 North and Layton Hill Field Road interchanges; this will extend freeway "Lane Gain" improvements northward to include four lanes in each direction (one Express Lane and three General Purpose Lanes)
  • Construct a new five lane roadway from Fort Lane to Flint Street (750 South connection) including a bridge structure over the railroad right-of-way
  • Provide signalized intersections at Flint Street, Main Street, and Fort Lane on the 750 South connection. Construct a new five lane roadway from Fort Lane to Flint Street (750 South connection)
  • Reconstruct Main Street from the new 750 South to Church Street, including improvements to the Main Street and Gentile Street intersection
  • Remove the existing at-grade railroad crossing at 900 South and construct a cul-de-sac on the west side of the railroad
  • Construct a cul-de-sac at the west end of Larson Lane and a new access road from Larson Lane to the new 750 South
