SALT LAKE COUNTY -- A five-car accident forced the closure of the westbound lanes of Bangerter Highway at Redwood Road on the south end of the Salt Lake Valley Monday evening.

Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies say an SUV was slowing down at a stoplight on Bangerter when it was rear-ended by a black Ford Expedition. The collision deflected the Expedition into oncoming traffic, where it was T-boned on the passenger side.

The driver of the Expedition, a 41-year-old male, was transported by medical helicopter to University Hospital. His 9-year-old son, who was riding in the passenger seat, was airlifted to Primary Children's Medical Center. Both are listed in serious condition.

At the same time the first accident occurred, an Acura driving in the same area was hit by a white truck. The female drivers involved were transported to Jordan Valley Medical Center by ambulance.

Westbound Bangerter Highway was closed for several hours while deputies investigated the scene.
