(KSL News) Today marks the first day of Kwanzaa.
The seven day holiday was founded by Dr. Ron Karenga in 1966 for African Americans to reflect on ancestry and culture. It involves seven daily principles of unity, self-determination, work and responsibility, economic strength, purpose, creativity and faith.
Gifts are traditionally given between parents and children on the last day which is January first.
Kwanzaa is a Swahili word meaning "First Fruit."
