SALT LAKE CITY -- Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert wants some important questions answered about the state's canal system. He has ordered a water task force to study and make recommendations for the proper oversight of the state's 5,300 miles of canals.
Herbert specifically wants to know:
- Who's responsible for oversight and regulation
- How the state can achieve oversight
- Who will identify high-hazard canals?
The questions follow last weekend's deadly canal break and mudslide in Logan. Herbert says the Logan disaster highlights the need to create public policy to protect both citizens and the water supply.
