CEDAR CITY -- A controlled fire near Panguitch Lake has burned across 1,690 acres, and crews are looking to put it out for good.
Lightning ignited the Horse Valley Fire back on July 2. Initially, the southern part of the fire was allowed to burn in order to control and restore the natural landscape.
Officials say burns like this one play an important role in the ecosystem. The Horse Valley Fire helped regenerate aspen in the area. It also helped eliminate unwanted vegetation that could fuel future fires.
Rangers say this fire will significantly reduce the risk for larger fires later in the summer.
State fire crews teamed up with crews from the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the U.S. Forest service to manage the blaze.
Officials have shut down the area between Pole Hollow Road and Caddy Creek Road for public safety. The area east of Horse Valley Road will remain closed as well, until the fire is completely suppressed.
