SALT LAKE CITY -- It may be a sign a lot of people are still struggling in our economy. The number of bankruptcies in Utah is soaring.

If bankruptcy court statistics hold out for the rest of the year, Utah could see some 15,000 filings in 2009.

Already for the first half of the year, the number of bankruptcies is up 62 percent from the same time period one year ago. In the first two quarters of this year, 6,817 bankruptcies have been filed.

Those numbers are still lower than those from the earlier part of this decade. A new law took effect in 2005 making it more difficult and more costly to file for bankruptcy.
