DRAPER -- An inmate was hospitalized Saturday after being stabbed in the head during a fight at the Utah State Prison. Corrections officials said the inmate suffered a puncture wound behind his ear.
The altercation began about 3:30 p.m. in a common area at the medium-security Wasatch facility.
"There were several inmates involved," Corrections Spokeswoman Angie Welling told KSL NewsRadio. "No corrections staff saw it, but we are reviewing video from security cameras to see what we can find."
Shortly after the attack, the wounded inmate sought help. He was transported to University Hospital where he was last reported to be in stable condition.
A unit at the Wasatch facility is in lockdown. Welling told KSL NewsRadio that three inmates were being questioned about their roles in the incident. It was unknown how many inmates were involved in the attack or what precipitated it.
Prison officials said the weapon, believed to be a homemade device, has not been located.
