SALT LAKE COUNTY -- A Millcreek man shot dead by officers on Friday appeared to be ready for a long shootout.
Salt Lake County Sheriff's officials say 64-year-old George Huntzinger had several boxes of ammo stacked at each window of his apartment so he could reload from any one of them.
They say Huntzinger began randomly firing a gun from his apartment balcony. When officers arrived, he took aim at them.
That's when two deputies fired shots at Huntzinger. At least one hit him in the head. He later died.
Those officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. Autopsy results are expected to be available within the next few weeks.
Sheriff's officials haven't found any notes indicating Huntzinger's intentions. His family said he was going through a divorce, but said Friday's actions were out of character.
