Whit Johnson reportingBeyond the large meal, friends and family, every year people across the country volunteer their time to make Thanksgiving special for people in need.

Utahns are very generous during the holidays. Today I met entire families who spent the day serving and delivering food.

And it's needed. In the Salt Lake area alone hundreds are homeless, and thousands more are hungry.

Today, many volunteers helped provide a hot meal to those in need. But more important, they brought a smile, a sign of affection, a message that somebody cares. Along with the turkey and gravy, they bring Thanksgiving to those searching for something to be thankful for... and thankful they were.

Ronald Anderson / Enjoying Thanksgiving meal: "It tastes real good."

Heather Willie / Enjoying Thanksgiving meal: "I'm thankful to be here with my family, that I have a family."
