SALT LAKE CITY -- A few high school seniors have a unique assignment before they finish school: They have to rock out.
"Pomp and Circumstance" will play at the graduation ceremony for Granger High School, but so will Rod Stewart's "Forever Young." The seniors at Granger's Rock School will play it.
Rock School is a unique program at Granger that enhances students' stage-performance techniques and hones their songwriting skills.
Teacher Christopher Moore said, "This is the second year, and we're picking up steam. We've got a lot of support from the students, from the school and from the principal."
Moore says they're getting a lot of support from parents, too, although they've had a few express their displeasure from kids playing rock. But, he says kids can learn something they can't from sheet music; how to jam.
"Improvisation, or jamming, requires a musician to really know their instrument [and] requires them to know all aspects about music," Moore said.
Moore says some of the students are just starting to learn their instruments, but others are good enough to record right now.
