SALT LAKE CITY -- A major school district is planning a change that may throw you off when you need to reach your kids. All Granite School District phone numbers are going to the 385 area code on June 15. They are alerting parents now in a newsletter and will tell them about it again in the fall before school starts.
Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley said, "Obviously it's going to be an impact to our patrons but also to our internal employees as well. Hopefully it will be a seamless transition, but there will always be some hiccups here and there."
Horsley says they wanted to keep their 646 prefix as they add numbers but are running out under 801. He said, "In order to keep allowing our numbers to increase we needed to make the switch. Otherwise we would have to change our prefix as well, and that would mean additional confusion."
Switching all of the numbers over to the 385 area code lets them keep the four-digit extension dialing between offices and schools.
Horsley says making the change over the summer should help in the transition.
