SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- U.S. District Judge David Winder has died.
He was 76.
Court officials say Winder died Tuesday from an unspecified longtime illness.
Winder was appointed to Utah's 3rd District court by former Gov. Scott Matheson in 1977. A year later, he was voted Judge of the Year by the Utah State Bar.
In 1979, President Jimmy Carter appointed Winder to the federal court.
Born in Salt Lake City, Winder obtained an English degree from the University of Utah and his law degree from Stanford Law School.
Winder also served as an assistant U.S. attorney and chief deputy district attorney.
Memorial service details had not been finalized on Tuesday.
