SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A decision on a proposal to ban smoking in public places has been postponed until next week.

The Salt Lake City Council put off taking action last night on the proposed ordinance.

The proposal would ban smoking in all city-owned outdoor places, such as parks, cemeteries and golf courses. It would also prohibit smoking within 50 feet of large gatherings taking place on public property.

Violators of the ordinance could be fined $25.

The City Council is expected to vote on the proposal on Tuesday.
