PROVO, Utah (AP) -- The Provo City Council has voted to allow city residents to keep chickens on their property.
The council voted 4-3 in favor of the ordinance on Tuesday. Provo residents living in single-family homes in residential zones will be allowed to keep up to six hens. No roosters are allowed.
Councilwoman Cindy Clark says the issue is at the forefront as residents try to be more self-sufficient during the economic downturn. She says the purpose of her proposal is to allow residents to have egg-producing hens.
Some council members though, say they're concerned about noise and disease issues.
The ordinance allows for up to two hens on a 6,000-square-foot property and one more for every additional 1,000 square feet, with a maximum of six. The council will evaluate the ordinance in one year.
