WEST VALLEY CITY -- A West Valley man got a High 5 Friday morning for his secret acts of service.
A co-worker nominated John Maez for the honor. She wrote, "He acts as if he has a tough and rough exterior, but underneath he is a lovable teddy bear with a heart as big as Texas!"
One example of John's willingness to go above and beyond in helping others came when he found a class ring outside of a bank.
He asked around but couldn't find the owner. So he looked at the initials on the ring, went to the high school it was from, tracked down all the people from that class year with those initials, and contacted them until he found the ring's owner.
His daughter, Savannah Maez, said, "He goes to things he doesn't have to go to and he doesn't get paid for it. He helps people in the community."
But John said, "I don't think I do any more than anyone else would do. I do what I hope people would do for me."
