SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Some of Utah's yellow school buses are turning green.
On Monday, Sevier County became the third school district statewide to begin using clean-burning, compressed natural gas instead of tradition fuel to power their buses. Sevier used a $10,000 grant from AAA and a $5,000 grant from the state to convert one bus.
Utah Clean Cities Coalition director Robin Erickson says the Jordan School District already has 44 such buses and Alpine School District has one.
Sevier transportation supervisor Lynn Julander says the district anticipates saving about $2,000 annually in fuel costs. He says natural gas runs about 7 cent a mile cheaper than typical fuel.
Jordan transportation director Jim Hinckle says the district's buses also have lower maintenance costs and quieter engines.
