Press Release HURRICANE -- Hurricane City Police have identified the victim of a fatal two-car crash on State Route 9 on Friday afternoon as 45-year-old Stanley Elton of St. George.

Elton was killed just after 3 p.m. when the Dodge truck he was driving westbound on SR 9 veered into the eastbound lane of travel. The speed limit along this stretch of SR-9 near the Washington County Fairgrounds is 55 mph, although it is not known at this time how fast Elton was driving when his truck crossed into oncoming traffic.

Elton's vehicle struck an eastbound converted Ford Van pulling a trailer full of yard care equipment and chemical supplies. Elton was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from his vehicle.

The driver of the van, 24-year-old Nicholas Novak of St. George, was not injured in the crash. Novak was able to get out of his vehicle and speak with officers when emergency crews arrived. Novak told officers he tried to avoid Elton's truck before the head-on collision occurred.

A passenger in Novak's van, 32-year-old John Bunderson of St. George, was extricated from the vehicle and transported by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center in serious condition. Both men were wearing seat belts.

Hazmat crews cleared the roadway of several gallons of yard care chemicals that were spilled during the accident. Traffic was diverted for a short time into the westbound lanes while emergency crews cleared the eastbound lanes of crash debris. An investigation into the cause of the accident continues.
