ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- The newest Ironman Triathlon is coming to Washington County in southern Utah.

The announcement was made this week that the St. George area will play host to the grueling race that includes a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2 mile marathon.

The first race is scheduled for May 1, 2010. The race will be a qualifier for the Ironman World Championship, which happens each October in Hawaii.

Local leaders hope the event will highlight the area's recreation opportunities and bring millions of dollars to the local economy.

The swim will be through the Sand Hollow Reservoir, the bike ride will go throughout the county and the run will be through the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve and downtown St. George.

It will be open to 2,500 participants.
