SALT LAKE CITY -- A driver took his eyes off the road for a split second Tuesday afternoon and hit a pedestrian. It happened near 300 West and 400 North in Salt Lake City.

Police say the driver says he got distracted. Just at that moment, a man stepped out from behind a truck that was parked on the street, and the driver hit him.

"It's a very serious accident. Right now, it's very touch-and-go as to whether he will actually live," said Salt Lake police Lt. Melody Grey.

Police did drug and alcohol testing on the driver, but say that is just routine procedure. They believe speed was likely a factor in the accident.
