SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Kaysville man has been sentenced to five months in prison for violating federal environmental laws.

Jay Bert Atwater pleaded guilty in November to charges that his furniture business, Heritage Restoration, and its employees dumped paint-stripping chemicals containing toxic methylene chloride and other substances in drains of the Central Davis Sewer District.

Atwater, who was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell, also will serve five months of home confinement. Campbell recommended that Atwater be given work release during his incarceration.

Atwater and his business will pay $35,000 in fines and fees.

Defense attorney Max Wheeler says Atwater got a reduced sentenced because he cooperated with investigators and confessed to his conduct.
