MARATHON, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities have shot a federal fugitive who pointed a loaded assault rifle at them while resisting arrest at a marina in the Florida Keys.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officers and a local deputy served an arrest warrant Tuesday for Larkin Baggett, a Utah fugitive who is charged with violating federal hazardous waste and clean water laws. Baggett came out of his trailer and pointed his rifle at authorities.
They fired back and wounded him. He was airlifted to a hospital with gunshot wounds to his face and stomach. He underwent surgery and was in critical condition.
According to the EPA, an investigation into possible charges against Baggett is ongoing by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
The investigation concerning the shooting is being conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. [CLICK HERE to read the entire statement from the EPA]
According to a federal indictment, Baggett's company, Chemical Consultants, illegally dumped chemicals like truck wash acid, aluminum brightener and soaps into sewer drains.
Prosecutors allege Baggett had his employees dump a nasty mix of toxic chemicals through a drain, an open grate, a paved alley and some gravel. The government claims it happened at two locations in North Salt Lake.
