SALT LAKE CITY -- It has been 50 years since the failed uprising and exile of the Dalai Lama in Tibet.

Tuesday, the Tibetan spiritual leader spoke to supporters in India, saying Chinese rule has made life for Tibetans, "hell on earth". He said Tibetan people and their culture are nearing extinction because of China's control of the Himalayan region.

Chinese leaders say Tibet has been part of China for centuries and called Tuesday's statement from the Dalai Lama lies.

The call for a free Tibet rang out in cities across the world, including Salt Lake City. Dozens of people demonstrated in downtown.

The group chanted and sang as they marched from the Federal Building to the City-County Building on this 50-year anniversary.
