SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Utah Senate has passed a bill that would make it a misdemeanor to text message or e-mail with a cell phone while driving.

Senate Bill 149 also would allow felony charges for repeat offenders involved in a serious accident.

Sen. Lyle Hillyard, R-Logan, sponsored the bill. He says he's hoping to make penalties for driving while texting comparable to those for driving under the influence.

The measure passed the Senate by a 25-1 vote Wednesday and now goes to the House.
