SALT LAKE CITY — A wrong-way driver who troopers say caused a crash on I-80 was arrested late Sunday.
The 29-year-old man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of driving the wrong way on a one-way street, negligently operating a vehicle resulting in injury and driving the wrong way while under the influence.
Just after 11 p.m., Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded to a crash on I-80 in Parley's Canyon. Troopers found a Ford F-150 with "major front-end damage" and facing the wrong way and a van that had "sustained major impact damage to the driver's side door, causing it to overturn on its passenger side."
"I spoke with the victim, who stated he saw a vehicle coming toward him on a one-way highway. He attempted to avoid the vehicle by swerving to the right, but his vehicle was struck by the suspect vehicle in the process," a police booking affidavit states.
The victim was taking to a local hospital for undisclosed injuries.
The driver of the F-150 "stated he was driving westbound from Park City when he saw a vehicle ahead and hit it," according to the affidavit.
Troopers detected an odor of alcohol on the man's breath and had him perform DUI tests, during which troopers noticed several signs of impairment, the affidavit states. He was arrested and taken to jail after the tests were completed.
