SALT LAKE CITY — Fire crews battled a three-alarm structure fire at a building in an industrial area near 350 South and Orange Street, the Salt Lake City Fire Department said Tuesday afternoon.

At one point, a traffic camera operated by the Utah Department of Transportation captured a thick cloud of black smoke billowing over the area. The smoke could be seen from nearby I-80 and Redwood Road and from as far away as Taylorsville, according to comments on KSL's Facebook page.

Salt Lake Fire Capt. Chad Jepperson said crews have since made progress in bringing the fire under control. No one was inside the building at the time the fire broke out.

UDOT said the fire is affecting southbound Redwood Road, but that no lanes are blocked. Fire officials are, however, asking the public to avoid the area.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no injuries have been reported at this time.
