LAYTON — Two men were arrested Saturday for allegedly trafficking drugs.

Arnulfo Ruiz Mendez, 32, and Gabriel Edwin Mendez Franco, 22, were booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of attempting to distribute controlled substances after police and the FBI were notified of an arranged delivery of a "substantial amount of methamphetamine," according to a police booking affidavit.

Ruiz and Franco had allegedly arranged a delivery at the Hilton Garden Inn in Layton through a contact residing in Mexico. Agents with the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force and the FBI set up in the area were able to follow the two men to a room where the delivery took place, the affidavit said.

Following the delivery, agents said they arrested the two men and discovered approximately 56 pounds of methamphetamine inside a large bag in the Chevrolet Silverado they were driving that had an Arizona license plate.

Ruiz told police he obtained the drugs in Phoenix and was to receive $4,000 for the delivery, while Mendez told police he would receive $1,000 for transporting the drugs, the affidavit alleges.

Ruiz and Mendez are also being held on immigration and federal complaints, the affidavit says.
