SOUTH JORDAN — A new chapter of entertainment is about to begin at the Salt Lake Bees' new baseball stadium in Daybreak. Miller Sports and Entertainment is releasing its new Summer Series, happening both in and around The Ballpark at America First Square.
The surrounding space outside the ballpark in South Jordan is getting ready to hold its first ticketed event Saturday night in the new amphitheater next to the stadium. It's the first of many events to come, creating a big entertainment entrance to the ballpark.
The vision for the area is pretty ambitious. The new outdoor amphitheater — called the Kennecott Stage at America First Square — will play host to concerts and shows, with seats to accommodate between 2,000 and 3,000 people. Surrounding it, a series of restaurants are slated to come in, including Hires Big H next month.
On the other side, a new eight-screen Megaplex theater, with its own bowling alley, arcade and a scratch kitchen are opening July 1.
In the wintertime, the amphitheater seating area transforms into an ice skating rink. The vice president of business development with Miller Sports and Entertainment walked KSL-TV through the layout Friday morning and said it's their vision to create a space everyone wants to come to.
"(We're) very much interested in bringing the community together and bringing families and people together to recreate and enjoy entertainment together with family and friends. That's what this whole setup is all about," said Dustin Dehlin.
That starts off with their Summer Series featuring the Johnson Files comedy show on Saturday, then concerts and movie nights inside the ballpark itself. And later in the year, a whole slate of events for the holidays at Christmas time is planned, including a holiday light show.
There's a lot going on, and last-minute work to make it happen. By Saturday night, a new 13-by-26-foot video board will be up on stage at the amphitheater.
