SOUTH SALT LAKE — A local business is helping raise money for cancer research.
Rodney and Trish Van Doren, owners of Treasures N Creations in South Salt Lake, are hosting a benefit for the Huntsman Cancer Institute this weekend after they both lived through cancer.
"We're survivors. We're going to keep right on going because the universe wants us to be here," said Trish Van Doren.
Trish had skin cancer. Years later, her husband, Rodney, a Navy veteran, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
His cancer worsened, and he was given four to six months to live.
"I survived a death sentence," Rodney Van Doren said.
He said the CAR T-cell therapy he received at Huntsman Cancer Institute saved his life.
"I've been clear for 18 months," he said.
Now, the couple is helping raise awareness and supporting others on their cancer journey.
"We're not rich. We're not trying to be rich. We've been looking for a way to give back, and we found a way," Rodney said.
This weekend at their jewelry and crystal store, Treasures N Creations, the Van Dorens are holding a raffle. Every penny from the raffle will go to Huntsman Cancer Institute, as well as a percentage of every sale they get throughout the weekend.
Raffle tickets are $5 each. Winners will be drawn at 5:30 pm on Sunday, May 11.
"I know that Mother's Day can sometimes be tough because that there's mothers out there that aren't here that have walked the cancer journey," Trish said. "We're here in love and support."
Treasures N Creations is located at 3419 S State Street, South Salt Lake.
