MURRAY — Murray police are investigating a hit-and-run after two Utah Transit Authority employees were hit by a vehicle early Thursday.
According to UTA spokesman Gavin Gustafson, two UTA maintenance workers were lifting the wheels on a rail service truck near the 5900 South rail crossing about 2 a.m. when they were hit by a vehicle traveling east. Two other employees rushed to their side and started providing first aid until medics arrived on scene, UTA said.
Gustafson said the vehicle was a white SUV and the person driving it ran away, but a release from UTA later Thursday said the suspect has since turned himself in and is being interviewed by investigators.
Both employees were taken to the hospital, with one in critical condition and the other in serious condition, Gustafson said.
"The one that is in critical condition was rushed into surgery. I know that much. It was a life-threatening situation," he said.
The man who underwent surgery is out and recovering, but UTA says his injuries will have lifelong impacts.
The employees were wearing high visibility equipment, and THE rail service truck they were working on has work lights and flashing lights that were on when the employees were hit, UTA said.
