OREM — A man accused of robbing a couple of massage parlors was arrested after police reported shots were fired.
No injuries were reported, and no other details of the officer shooting were released as of Friday afternoon.
Although police have not released the name of the person taken into custody, John Matthew Gutierrez, 25, of Provo, was booked into the Utah County Jail Thursday night for investigation of three counts of aggravated robbery, according to Utah County Jail records.
At about 8:50 p.m., Gutierrez entered Happy Day Massage, 565 S. State, in Orem, "and pointed (a) revolver at employees and demanded money," according to a police booking affidavit.
An hour later, he entered Lucky Day Massage, 289 E. 930 South, "and again demanded money with the use of the firearm," the affidavit states. He then went to a third massage parlor nearby, with the intent to rob it, but "was intercepted by an Orem police officer who had recognized (Gutierrez) from his clothing description," according to the affidavit.
The police booking sheet states, "Orem officers were able to take John into custody," but the report doesn't mention shots being fired.
According to a statement from Orem police, officers responded at about 9 p.m. to a report of a robbery with a weapon in the area of 500 S. State. While investigating that incident, officers received a report of a second robbery south of that location involving a man matching the description from the first robbery, according to police.
"Officers canvassed the area and were able to locate the male suspect in the area of 600 E. 1600 South. Officers made contact with the male suspect and during this interaction, a report of shots fired was made, and the suspect was taken into custody. No reports of injury were made," police said in a prepared statement.
An officer-involved critical incident protocol was invoked, which typically happens when an officer fires their weapon. No other details about the shooting have been released.
