(KSL News) One of Utah's great choral directors has died.
Jay Welch is best known for creating the Jay Welch Chorale, one of the state's premiere singing groups.
He also founded and conducted the Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus and served as both assistant music director and then music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 1974.
Welch taught at the University of Utah's School of Music until he retired in 1993.
He died Sunday at the age of 83.
