LAYTON — Police say they arrested a student at Layton High School on Friday after he brought a gun to school and showed it off to classmates.

School administrators got a tip that a student had a handgun in his backpack about 10:45 a.m., Layton police said. Administrators took the student out of class and confiscated his backpack, where they located a gun.

Police said no threats were made by the student, and he showed no indication of wanting to use it at school, but he did show the firearm to a few people.

The school principal sent an email out to all parents notifying them a student was arrested Friday afternoon by Layton police for investigation of being in possession of a weapon at school.

"The student did not threaten anyone, and no one was injured as a result, but the possession of a weapon on school property is a serious offense," principal Brock Jackman said. "We appreciate it when information is shared in an effort to keep our students and community safe."

Police said the teenager cooperated with police and was booked into juvenile detention for investigation of misdemeanor charges. An investigation is underway to determine where and how the student got the gun.
